Journey

I have been studying sculpture for a number of years and it wasn't until a couple of years ago that I found what it is that I want to sculpt.  This is what I had been struggling with for so many years.  I wanted to sculpt something different and unique as an expression of who I am and what I love.  I studied figurative sculpture and horses, but that wasn't enough and soon lost interest.  So I thought and thought about what to do and struggled with this for two or three years with no avail.

One day I asked an artist I had met and talked with during these last few years, "Where do you get all of your ideas from?  I want to sculpt but I don't know what it is I want to sculpt." He responded, "Sculpt what you love."  So I thought about that for a few weeks and finally realized what it was that I loved.  I loved Asia!!!  Ever since I can remember I have been fascinated with the people, the land, the food, the architecture, and its history.  But I think what I liked the most when I was younger were the martial arts movies and war stories.

I finally knew what it was that I wanted to sculpt, and I wanted to portray life through the Asian culture.  I decided to start with my most resent experience in Asia.  I lived in South Korea for two years as a missionary and then studied there for one and a half years after.  I thought about what I had seen and the experiences I had while I was there and looked at the pictures I had taken.  While doing this, I remembered the many experiences I had while traveling, how amazed I was with the markets, and how much I enjoyed and appreciated the food in the markets.  This became my focus for my art and my mind began to be flooded with ideas of what I wanted to create. The first piece I created is titled "A Day at the Market".  Click the link to the left to see a description and picture.

I'll soon have more sculptures and pictures available.
